What Exactly Is ISO 27001?

On its own, the label "ISO 27001" doesn’t reveal much. But when you hear its full title—ISO/IEC 27001: Information Technology – Security Techniques – Information Security Management Systems – Requirements—it starts to hint at what this certification is all about.

So, what’s the gist of it? ISO 27001 is widely recognized as the top global standard for information security. The "ISO" part comes from the International Organisation for Standardisation, which teamed up with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to craft this benchmark. Both groups are heavyweights in the world of international standards, shaping guidelines that industries everywhere rely on.

At its core, ISO 27001 exists to guide organizations—no matter their size or sector—in safeguarding their data in a practical, structured way. It does this by encouraging them to set up an Information Security Management System (ISMS), which is really just a systematic approach to keeping information secure without breaking the bank.

Why Does ISO 27001 Matter So Much?

This standard hands companies the know-how they need to shield their most precious data. Plus, getting certified under ISO 27001 is a badge of honor—it shows customers, partners, and anyone else paying attention that your organization takes data protection seriously.

Here’s the kicker, though: despite how valuable this certification is, it’s not all that common.

Key Goals of ISO 27001

When it comes to protecting information, ISO 27001 zeroes in on three big priorities:

  • Confidentiality: Making sure only the right people can peek at the data.

  • Integrity: Ensuring only authorized folks can tweak or update that data.

  • Availability: Guaranteeing the data’s there whenever those authorized people need it.

What Does This Mean for Our Users?

For us, being ISO 27001 certified is a promise—to our engagement partners and community users alike—that their information is in safe hands. It also means our own company data stays locked down tight. This peace of mind lets VeriLinx keep growing in a way that’s both secure and well-managed. And if you’ve got questions about how we handle information security here at VeriLinx, we’re more than happy to chat about it—just reach out!
